Lay a jersey that fits you flat, measure straight across from armpit to armpit with a ruler and double the number. That is the chest size: 38 inches is M, 40 is L, 42 is XL. A string or cable around the chest, then measured on a ruler, also works.
Most homes have a ruler or a scale somewhere, even if the tailor’s tape is missing. These methods are accurate to about an inch, which is enough to pick the right jersey size.
Method 1: measure a jersey you own
Pick a jersey or T-shirt that fits the way you like. Lay it flat, smooth out the wrinkles and measure straight across the chest, one inch below the armpits, from side seam to side seam. Double it. A 20 inch flat measurement is a 40 inch chest, which is our L.
Method 2: string or cable
Wrap a piece of string, a phone charger cable or a shoelace around your chest under the arms. Pinch the point where it meets, then lay it along a ruler or a 30 cm scale, moving the scale along as needed.
Method 3: A4 paper
An A4 sheet is 29.7 cm long, almost 30 cm. With a string around your chest, count how many A4 lengths it covers. Three sheets and a bit is about 92 to 96 cm, which is S to M.
